Top 7 strangest mobile apps
The number of mobile applications is rising exponentially. In 2021 Play Store can boast more than 3 million apps, making it the largest app storage (Apple users can only choose among 2 million).
So today I decided to explore the largest app storage and found some very popular, but (in my opinion) absolutely useless apps. Why don’t we check them out?
- S.M.T.H. or Send Me To Heaven, or Send your phone to heaven. The app actually estimates the height of the throw when you throw your phone upwards. Quite risky, isn’t it?
Number of downloads: 500K+
2. Binky
The description in Google Store says Satisfy your phone cravings.
Binky looks like a social network app, but in reality just imitates it. You can send messages, scroll a news feed composed of random pictures, repost or save for later, but no one will see it. It is just a simulator of a social network.
Number of downloads: 10K+
3. Yo
A step closer to a social network app. With Yo you actually can send messages to your friends, but they will contain only ‘Yo’. A new feature has been added recently: you can now also attach a link or a location to a ‘Yo’.
Number of downloads: 1M+
As the name implies, the idea is to create fake chats that look like real ones. Edit every detail, including profiles of your “friends”, control both sides of the conversation, send text messages, audios to each other, anything. It can be used to joke with your friends making them believe you are actually chatting!, says the description. Well, it certainly is popular
Number of downloads: 10M+
5. Nothing
The app’s functionality is not exactly nothing: it can change the mode from day to night, show some random numbers and pictures. And that is all, there’s absolutely no practical way to use the app.
Number of downloads: 1M+
6. I Am Rich
Well, this is of no practical use as well: there are only 2 pictures that say the user’s bought the most expensive app in Google Play (although in reality it’s free).
Number of downloads: 10K+
7. The most expensive horror game
In contrast to all the other apps on the list, this app is a paid one. It is just a basic horror-style runner-arcade, but claims to be the most expensive. The cost at the moment is 150$.
The description says Download and show you richness. Well, we’d rather not try.
Number of downloads: 10K+
The last two apps might be a tribute to the I Am Rich application, which was released in 2008 and cost almost 1000$. The app was described as “a work of art with no hidden function at all”, its only purpose was for users to show that they were able to afford it. Although the application was removed from the App Store without explanation by Apple the next day, there already were 9 (!) downloads. At least one of the “users” claimed to have done so accidentally.
On February 23, 2009, CNET Asia reported on the I Am Richer app, developed on Android and released for US$200.
As for today, I could find several alternatives of I Am Rich, but all of them free.
